ARE YOU KIDDIN’ ME?
“Are you kiddin’ me?” I asked myself the rhetorical question. I knew good and well the answer to the question; it was a resounding “No!” Not a major event, I was more aggravated than anything else. Sometimes being agitated with ourselves is worse than with others.
As I took the Bluetooth out of my ear, before I stashed it and my phone out of the sight of bad folks, I remembered that I’d forgotten my I-Pod… yet again.
I’d been out of town and had tucked my tiny jukebox in my briefcase, but I’d been back in town for almost a week. That was my third trip to the gym musicless.
The crazy part is that it is a big deal for me to have music when I workout – monumental actually. But once I’m done, my priorities fade like a vapor.
I sat in my truck, an older version of my younger self, so much time, so different, so much more wisdom… and yet so much still the same kid, just added pounds and wrinkles.
I flashed back to high school, the first year of it, P.E. class. Showering was mandatory and the P.E. coach stood guard to enforce the rule. At the time, I couldn’t imagine such a horrid job. Over three decades later and the job seems even worse.
I developed a habit back then when it comes to showering. Not the showering part, the drying off part.It didn’t take too long for me to forget my towel. I didn’t need one for football practice, they handed them out, but P.E. was a different story.
It was usually when I was getting dressed out for P.E. when I would realize I’d forgotten my towel yet again. It was a massive inconvenience to shower without the advantage of a towel to dry off. I was sure I’d remember the towel that night for the next day… which rarely happened.
Because I forgot my towel so often when I was a kid, I still use my hands like a squeegee on my torso, arms, and legs to wring off the excess water when I shower now. Those years of trying to pull dry clothes over a wet body have stuck with me.
We learn, for the most part, to get around our weaknesses and tendencies. If I don’t want to forget something, I put it in front of door so I’ll trip over it. We create systems to outwit ourselves and to make life easier on us, as well as make us more efficient.
I’ve learned with the aggravating weaknesses we possess, we also have the flip side of that which is our strengths, or the gift’s were given.
We get the occasional setback to remind us where we came from. And with enough time we learn our strengths can become our weaknesses and our weaknesses our strengths.
It could be that when we pose the question, “Are you kiddin’ me?” To ourselves, It’s God reminding us of who we are… and Who He is.

A great big yes, He is always reminding us who we are verses who He is. I write my self a note on an 8×10 paper with whatever I need to remember with a black felt marker and put in on the face of my computer screen. That weakness of forgetfulness has gotten worst since my heart surgery and just plain age. Maybe it was the age I had the surgery. So I am have knee replacement on the 16, wondering how much more of my memory will I lost. I may have to write a note someday to remind myself who I am. But no problem for our Savior, He always remembers who I am and I have not needed a good memory yet to remember He loves me. As always, great post brother.

I can relate so well to this, Floyd–both the forgetting things and the frustration with myself. God surely must shake his head and chuckle.

I’ve said that phrase to myself countless times, Floyd. We do get ticked off when we forget something we know we shouldn’t – repeatedly – but it certainly does have a way of humbling us. So glad God has a sense of humor. 🙂
Blessings!

I’ve had a lot of those “Are you kiddin’ me?” moments too. (Just this morning I found three typos I made in things I published online.) And yes, this: “We create systems to outwit ourselves and to make life easier on us, as well as make us more efficient.” I love your outcome: use our weaknesses to remind us of who we are and who God is.

I lost a day a couple weeks ago. It was early am and I was on Facebook and one of my friends mentioned she was getting ready for church. I wondered why she was going to church on Saturday. Are you kidding me is it really Sunday. Sure enough I barely had time to dress and get to church. These days I write myself small sticky notes and put them on my computer – – appointments, assignments etc. Your post made me chuckle about forgetting your towel. Love your writing Floyd.

Oh, my, this one hit a nerve….you sound like us. We remember something that we need to take with us the following morning or something we need to do, and instead of getting up out of bed to get it ready, we throw something on the floor so we will have to “stumble” over it the next morning!! It is quite the reminder….until you forget why you threw it there in the first place and forget what the item was you were trying to remind yourself of! LOL! OH, the joys of getting older and more forgetful! But, thank God, we are still here and as well as we are. We have much to be thankful for. God bless you, brother.

Usually, if the inconvenience of forgetting whatever is big enough I don’t do it a second time. My husband and I make lists. Lots of lists… lol 🙂

I find myself slipping when it comes to appointments. Last week I was late by a half hour at PT. I didn’t realize it until days later as I looked at my calendar and felt so bad that I looked at the wrong appt. card, I sent my therapist a text to apologize. Now I am double checking myself…about everything! It’s one thing to inconvenience myself, but others…yikes.
